Math 4100 — Introduction to Number Theory

About the Course

The sieve of Eratosthenes can be used to generate a table of all prime numbers less than fixed number $n$.
The sieve of Eratosthenes can be used to generate a table of all prime numbers less than fixed number $n$.

Math 4100 is Clemson University's undergraduate course in number theory. This class will introduce students to classical concepts in number theory including divisibility properties, congruences, prime numbers, quadratic reciprocity, continued fractions, and Diophantine approximation. In the process, students will be exposed to standard proof techniques and will learn to use the Sage mathematical software to generate numerical experiments and implement algorithms.

Meeting Times

Class meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30pm until 1:45pm in Daniel 311. Regular attendance is expected, and students will be responsible for obtaining copies of notes or homeworks in the event of an absence.
